Mus (2), Maine Coon
When Michiel van den Berg finally had room for a cat, he went ahead and got two. But he got a raw deal: both Maine Kittens were violently ill. “Just because it’s thoroughbred, doesn’t mean you get a quality cat. But I couldn’t just return a live animal.” For weeks, he nursed his sick cats. Today, Mus weighs 8 kgs, but still requires a lot of attention. “These cats don’t live with me; I live in their space. They want to play all the time, and I get to clean up after them. They shed half their weight in cat hair every day. I’ve really felt desperate at times, but I’m used to it now. I’m glad they’re finally doing well.” #catsofinstagram #mainecoon #parool #animaliaamsterdam
Teun (2), Weimaraner
Zöe Homburg is a professional dog trainer, and chose a challenging dog for herself. Teun is completely focused on Zöe; he refuses to even look at anyone else. If she leaves him home with her boyfriend, he’ll whimper and whine until she gets back. Every day, she walks the Weimaraner for two hours, and during that time she has to make a real effort to train him. “Just walking around is really boring to him.” If for some reason she can’t walk him, he’ll tear the house down. “Laid-back dogs might be easier to train, but they’re so bland!” #weimaraner #dogsofinstagram #animaliaamsterdam #parool #amsterdam
Beer (10) is very close to his rabbit Snuffel (5), but she’s not exactly easygoing. Mother Nana thinks it might be the breed: “She knows what she wants and shows it—she’ll growl, or even bit when she doesn’t like something.” Her issues are abandonment and jealousy; Snuffel loves to be the center of attention. “But we like having a pet with personality! People forget that rabbits are incredibly smart and social animals. If you’d put her in a cage all by herself, she’d be completely depressed.” #amimaliaamsterdam #parool #psvandeweek #rabbitsofinstagram
Funky (9), Kinkerbuurt.
Until just recently, the 9.7 kg Funky was heavier than three-year-old Mace. Funky started to gain weight after she was spayed, but Eke van Heynegen is a little puzzled: “We weigh out her meals, and all she likes is dry food!” Eke bought Funky online. “We fell in love with her picture. She’s sweet. But not the sweetest—she’s not a lap cat. I’ve had cats that really felt like a person, but Funky’s just kind of there. Next time I won’t buy on a whim; I’ll choose character over looks.”

Before Bert Jansen joined the Amsterdam animal ambulance, he was a commercial director for a tech firm. He wanted to try a change of pace, volunteer work: “I had no idea what to expect, but what these people were capable of was unbelievable. The way they navigated the city, the knowledge they possessed: they were practically veterinarians. Today, he has been with the ambulance for thirteen years, and he’s seen it all: dogs, cats, geese, herons, alive, dead, in every part of the city. This goose was found hit by a car, at a notoriously hazardous spot along the President Allendelaan. It was brought to the animal shelter in hopes of a full recovery. #animaliaamsterdam #parool #pshetparool #dierenambulanceamsterdam #goose #geeseofinstagram
Simmie (4), Abyssinian, IJburg
In Daphne Roos’ family, animals have the majority vote, with 4 humans, 4 rabbits, 5 cats, 20 fish, and a small taxidermy collection. Boundaries between species sometimes fade. “Simmie is having an identity crisis,” according to Daphne. “I believe he thinks he’s a dog. He responds to commands like “sit”, and follows me everywhere—all the way to the shower. If it were up to Daphne, she would add chickens and goats, but her husband Albert has to draw the line somewhere. “Sometimes I come home and all she’ll say is ‘I couldn’t help it!” and there’ll be an entirely new cage with a rabbit just sitting in the corner. #abyssinian #catsofinstagram #aninaliaamsterdam #parool
Dorian (6), poodle.
Not even a year old, Dorian ran away from home, leaving Hans Eksteen and Jakop Maarschalk for two and a half weeks. “Everyone in the neighborhood was on the lookout! People would message us when they spotted him. Three times, I saw him and called out to him, and he just looked at me and ran the other way,” says Eksteen. “The minute we gave up looking, he showed up in the pound. I was afraid he’d reject me again, but he jumped into my arms, and he never left again. He’s the best-behaved dog I ever had—I don’t even have to keep him on a leash.” #animaliaamsterdam #psvandeweek #parool #poodle #dogsofinstagram

Piep (1), mallard
A group of neighbors on a cluster of house boats off Prinseneiland raised young Piep together. Her own mother had rejected her, but here on the boat, she found a loving home. “At night, she’d stay with the neighbor girls, but when they were in school, Piep joined me at the office,” says Mijs van de Griep, mother of Runa. In the summer we’d all swim in the canal. “She’d climb on your back and nible at your hair,” the girls say. Piep has left the nest, but she and her partner, Kniep, still drop by once a day. #parool #psvandeweek #dierenrijk #animaliaamsterdam #amsterdam #ducksofinstagram
